Trees which are dead or dying but remain standing are known as snags and are essential to heathy habitats. Birds are the most obvious benefactors. Larger predators characteristically hunt from tall snags for excellent visibility; limbs and fallen logs are used for perching, foraging and nesting by others. Mammals, amphibians and invertebrates seek refuge in natural cavities; fungi flourishes, breaking down organic matter releasing nutrients into the forest ecosystem. According to the National Wildlife Federation, “the removal of dead material from forests can mean a loss of habitat for up to one-fifth of the animals in the ecosystem.” * The Northern Cross appears accurately in this piece as does the constellation Sagitta.
