Galapagos Sea Lions try to enjoy midday slumbers on the beaches of Galapagos. This isn't always easy as mockingbirds continually stalk them looking up their noses for flies and other tasty treats! The Espanola Mockingbird is a little known species that is classified as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature because it has an extremely limited range restricted to two small islands in the archipelago. The Galapagos Sea Lion has a fluctuating population size and a suggested decline of 50% over the past 30 years and is classified as Endangered. The IUCN red list is the most comprehensive and up-to-date source of information regarding the conservation status and threats facing species in the world today. In the fall of 2009 I was privileged to study these species in their natural habitat as the recipient of the 10th fellowship of the Artists for Conservation Flag Expedition program.
