2 Samuel 22:29

For you are my lamp, O Lord,
And the Lord illumines my darkness.

This is one of three verses, along with the words in the hymns depicted that inspired this particular piece. Each of the verses are represented symbolically in the painting, the lantern (2 Samuel 22:29), the empty cracked cup and the cross in the window (Philippians 2:7,8) and the constellation in the sky behind the cross, Aquila, the Eagle ( Deut 32:11).

The hymns in this piece are "How Great Thou Art" and "Nailed to the Cross'. Each of the words and notes are legible.
