It is with anticipation every spring that I watch for the arrival of the male Red-winged Blackbirds. They appear well before the females to claim breeding territories. Males are highly vocal during this period showing off their bright red shoulder patches in assertive displays to competitors. Red-wings are among the most numerous bird species in Canada and the U.S. Sadly, according to the Atlas of Breeding Birds of Ontario, 2001-2005, they are among the few species not protected under Canada’s migratory Birds Conservation Act despite a decline in their populations.
